Snowshoe Maqua Lake Provincial Park
Located about 60 km south of town off of Highway 63, Maqua Lake Provincial Park is a hidden gem. There are lots of snowmobiling trails in the area, but it is also great for snowshoeing. A nice route is from the day use are and around the perimeter of the lake. There are lots of trails into the trees if you want to do a little exploring. Bring a shovel and some firewood if you want to have a fire at the day use area after your hike.
See the Northern Lights
Download the Aurora app, or join the local Facebook Aurora sightings group to get the down low on when the lights come out to dance. The Tom Weber boat launch in Waterways is the perfect viewing point area--away from the city pollution and lights.
Have a bonfire at Anzac Day Use Area
Another great spot for a short walk or snowshoe, followed by a fire by the lake. Anzac day use area is a great alternative to when the Gregoire Lake main entrance is closed for the season.
Hike to to YMM's Waterfall
Enjoy a short hike to this super cool (pun intended) winter spot. Check out my blog post for full details on how to reach the waterfall located off Timberline Drive in Thickwood.

Can you say pond hockey heaven? Strap on your skates at Gregoire Lake, and join a little game of shinny.
Sled Stony Mountain Wildland
Join the McMurray Sno-Drifters and take advantage of the beautifully groomed recreational trail and warm up huts. The Boreal forest awaits!
